Single Day Workshop Monotype

Join us for a fun evening of experimental printmaking in an open studio setting! Monotype is a painterly technique where textural images are made on a plexiglass plate and then transferred onto paper using a traditional etching press.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will compose their own images by drawing, painting, or pressing ink onto a plate. This is a fun and dynamic way of exploring images in a welcoming space. No prior printmaking experience is needed, and all materials are provided. Expert guidance will be on hand to support your creative journey. Just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to get your hands a little messy—aprons recommended!

Participants can expect to finish the 2 hour workshop with at least two unique 8” x 11”prints and hands on experience operating an etching press.

Val Loewen (she/her)

Val Loewen (she/her) is a mad Vancouver based artist living and practicing on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations. Her practice is based primarily in print media and intersects with other material based methodologies through which she investigates ideas of transformational narratives and visual histories. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, and Japan and she received her BFA from NSCAD University in 2012. 

She has practised as a collaborative artist, instructor, and print media technician at various printmaking centres in Vancouver since 2012, including the Art History and Visual Arts department at UBC, the Print and Publishing Festival in Dawson City Yukon, Mobil Art School in Vancouver, and at Malaspina Printmakers Society. She is currently the Studio Access and Equity Manager at Malaspina Printmakers Society where she works collaboratively with artists and community members to facilitate the exploration of print media.
