Mariko Ando is an accomplished printmaker and illustrator, working with etching, aquatint and chine colle.
Born and raised in Osaka and Nara, Ando first studied printmaking at Shukugawa Gakuin College, Japan. In Japan she found great success as an illustrator, working in advertising. After moving to Vancouver in 1999, she returned to printmaking and furthered her practice.
Her preference for traditional techniques is revealed in her expressive and precise line work, while integrating the experimental qualities of the intaglio printmaking process. Her prints are visual narratives, often threaded with humour and whimsy.
She has exhibited in both solo and group shows in Canada, the United States, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan. Ando has been a member of the Malaspina Printmakers Studio since 2002.
